Instructional Content
Over my 7-year teaching career, I had the opportunity to create and teach a wide variety of courses from College Writing I and II to Introduction to Technical Writing and Writing in Business. I have also served as an Assistant Director of a Writing Center and an Assistant Coordinator of a Writing Program which required me to create professional development and instructional content.
Composition Course Content
What follows is a sampling of instructional materials for composition courses including lecture slides, interactive course overviews, syllabi, schedules, activities, and video lectures.
Interactive Course Overview
In Fall of 2020, I taught 5 courses online. For each class, I created an interactive course overview that students could click through in any order to gain quick insights on material from the syllabus. Each tab can be clicked in any order to move through the material.
Research Writing Syllabus
This syllabus was for a second level college writing course that focused on research and argumentation. One primary goal for this syllabus was to make it accessible for screen readers and to provide design that allowed it to be easy to navigate for readers.
Academic Writing Lecture
This slide presentation focused on an introduction to academic writing for an English Composition I course that I taught to advanced high schoolers.
Research Writing Schedule
This course schedule was for the same second level college writing course as the syllabus. As a traditional online class, this course was broken down into weekly modules that had a variety of lectures, readings, activities, and assignments to help pace students through completing their larger research projects.
Writing Successful Research Papers Lecture
This slide presentation focuses on preparing first year writing students to write their first long research paper. It includes discussions of thesis statements, essay organization, time management, and drafting topes.
Draft Deconstruction Activity
The goal of this activity was to have students breakdown their larger research projects into the basic building blocks of a successful essay to visually verify that all of the essential parts were present.
Business and Technical Writing Course Content
Aside from teaching composition courses, I have also taught business and technical writing courses. What follows is a sampling of instructional materials including lecture slides, syllabi, and assignment sheets.
Lectures
What is Technical Writing? Lecture
This lecture served as an introduction into the Technical Writing course I taught in Spring 2020 and provided an overview of the tenants of writing in the workplace. All slide presentations for this course used the same color scheme and formatting to demonstrate branding continuity to the course.
Resumes & Cover Letters Lecture
This lecture introduced resumes and cover letters to my Technical Writing course in Spring 2020. This lecture provided basics of resume construction and understanding how to use keywords to match the job ad and beat the algorithms. There is also a cover letter evaluation activity at the end of the lecture.
Executive Summaries Lecture
This lecture was for my Writing in Business Course in Spring 2018 and introduced executive summaries. At the end of the lecture, the class worked in their semester teams on building an executive summary from the conclusion and recommendations they wrote during the previous class using their survey data.
Syllabi & Assignment Sheets
Internal Proposal Assignment
This assignment for Introduction to Technical Writing asked students to come up with a change they wanted to see implemented on our university’s campus, in the surround town, or in their hometown. Each student was required to write a three page proposal in order to argue for their changes to policies or procedures.
Formal Presentation
This assignment asked the students to expand their internal proposal into a formal presentation given to the same audience as their internal proposal. This required the students to draw on their design and research skills to expand their content to provide a persuasive presentation.
Note: this assignment was completed in 2020 and became an entirely virtual assignment rather than an in class presentation
